AX.25 can be used to encapsulate chat messages to other AX.25 users. Chat functions may also be built into telnet applications or bulletin board systems.

Below is a list of software that can be used for this purpose:

  • splitscreen - a UNIX implementation of the NOS ttylink command
  • talk-ax25 - a modifed version of the conventional Berkeley `talk' program to support Linux AX.25 operation
  • Craig Small's ttylink Daemon - a daemon to accept a ttylink TCP connection and convert it into a talk request
